May 2005

Spring is wonderful! After a grey winter with a little snow, a little rain and wind and a lot of cold and clouds, it’s great to be out in the sun. And even though we have been locked away in the house all winter, it feels good to see that much was accomplished.

The online Masters degree official got underway the first of February. It was so exciting to hear from many of the students and to hear their enthusiasm too. We received phone calls from all over and as far away as Australia. It has been inspiring to witness the appreciation that the students have for the sensitivity of the seminary toward their need for this kind of help in their education for their ministries. It was also fun to chat with them and renew some friendships.

The fifth member of the “joy-givers” of our lives was born February 21. After an incredible lineup of brilliant, entertaining and often times comical grandsons, we now have Gabriela Noelle Hill, “the princess.” What can we say, life can’t get much better than this.

The Women’s Bible study ended well. It was moving to hear the ladies state that they wanted to learn more about studying the Word next year. Then there is a Guatemalan friend in my group, who in September stated adamantly that I was not to ask her to pray or give her answers out loud because her English was not understandable, gave her testimony in April before ALL the groups. It was beautiful. Another lady, a believer from Mexico who has suffers in a difficult marriage and with very little English, has finally come forward looking for help, and wants to be discipled. But the most inspiring remark came from an unbelieving friend of one of the leaders, that had been prayed for for a number of years. While studying in 2 Thessalonians, the consequences for “those who perish” at the coming of Christ, she said, “What I want to know is, what does this have to do with those of us who belong to Christ?” Oh my, did she slip into salvation quietly one day, unbeknownst to us? God’s words in Isaiah 55:11 are so encouraging. So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it. And that’s not to mention all the fruit that it is bearing in OUR hearts!

Spring always seems to be that brief moment of just preparation for summer. This year we are trying to enjoy it as the beautiful NOW filled with the blossoming buds on our tulips and fruit trees and the beautiful fruit that is blossoming in our lives and the lives all around us. Pray with us that God will provide the increase in the fruit that is His. Pray for, well, here’s the list:
* Alvin’s first online class began in April– a real learning curve for him and the students.
* The program is still in need of financial backing. (Send us an e-mail or call if you would like to be a part of this. We’ll let you know more about the needs.)
* We are preparing to take a team to Guatemala at the end of July to serve at the Seminary for a week. Pray for successful ministries, health and safety.
* Laurie has a group of women that she will be personally discipling this summer.
* We are both preparing to teach classes in Bible Study Methods. We want them to be complementary. Laurie’s class is at a lower level and Alvin’s is at the university level.
* We had a church that informed us that they will not be able to continue supporting us. Pray for enough funds to remain in the ministry.
* Pray for our Friday evening dinners with 6 couple in our neighborhood. Three of us are believers and three are not.

And blessings on you, Friends,
Alvin & Laurie
